When people ask me what I do, I tell them that I am the person you call when you know there is a better way to settle up than having a row!
As a lawyer also trained as a settlement expert, it is not an easy job to tell people what it is that I do. Everyone knows what a lawyer is and most people understand what settlement is about. But "settlement lawyer" sounds like a contradiction.
The truth is that one of the great skills I have as a lawyer is the ability to understand a problem from all sides. Add to that the additional training in settlement skills and years of experience in working with people in conflict, and you have your answer.
So, as a settlement lawyer helping two people who have a disagreement, I can see the big picture. I can help people see the problems from many angles. I can also help them figure out how their decisions fit with the way "the law" would see the problem.
